Household and Communal Discipline
"A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire. Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction. Servants cannot be corrected by mere words; though they understand, they will not respond. Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them. A servant pampered from youth will turn out to be insolent."
- Hebrews 12:11 tells us that no discipline feels good when we are going through it, but it ultimately leads to righteousness and peace. No one will say that they enjoy being chastised or getting an earful from their parents, but this discipline is give out of love, to turn us from sin and to impart wisdom to us. Not only this, but it frees our parents from future distress over our behavior, whereas our lack of discipline will bring them shame and emotional turmoil because it will lead us to ruin. These verses also draw a parallel between discipline in the household and discipline in the community. A lack of discipline leads to anarchy in society, with shame and turmoil coming upon the entire community, whereas discipline leads to righteousness and peace for the nation.
Discipline for His Children
"An angry person stirs up conflicts, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins. Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. The accomplices of thieves are their own enemies; they are put under oath and dare not testify. Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that one gets justice. The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright."
- Some of theses undisciplined types are hot-tempered people who stir up trouble, like the prideful who think they do not need God and reject His laws because of their self-sufficiency, and the thief's accomplice, who is just as guilty as the thief. As we can see, those who lack discipline forsake God's commands. Ultimately, the justice of God means punishment awaits those who are wicked and unrepentant, while the love of God compels Him to discipline His children, to steer us back onto the path of righteousness.
